Sequoia Bookshare: A new approach to exchanging books

Maintaining the bookstore’s position as the premier place to buy and sell used books is becoming increasingly critical to a store’s competitiveness. Stores not only must compete with off campus stores, but now face competition from Amazon, eBay, student swap sites, and book retailers.

To help our customers remain at the top of the used book pyramid, Sequoia, in conjunction with the suggestions of many of our customers, has developed Bookshare, a program that allows the fast and easy exchange of used textbook overstock. Sequoia Bookshare connects bookstores to the latest in retail technology and is an indispensable tool in the changing landscape of the college bookstore industry.

Stores using Bookshare have realized several advantages to the product. Stores are able to dispose of non-returnable books that have higher value at other schools. Stores are also able to sell books to partner stores instead of returning them to wholesalers, saving money on re-stocking fees and maintaining a superior wholesaler rating. Bookshare also features Shared Buyback where students receive the most money for textbooks during buyback, demonstrating that your store is doing everything it can to lower educational costs.

Sequoia Bookshare gives your store the ability to partner with other stores to generate maximum profits by selling overstock inventory and engaging in shared buyback with partner stores. Sequoia Bookshare also features cascading wantlists in which Bookshare will match your store’s wantlists with other stores’ posted sell lists. Designed to simplify the process of obtaining used books for your store, Bookshare gives you the ability to easily exchange overstock inventory and buy books back from students at the best price.

On its first day, there were over $1.5 million in books available on Bookshare Network. Currently, there are over 70 active store partnerships trading overstock books and sharing buyback inventory. Sequoia’s next big Bookshare release will be in February 2009. This release will give thousands of non-Sequoia bookstores the ability to post their overstock books and order through Bookshare and will dramatically increase the number of online store partnerships and available textbooks.
